Hello and welcome back to The Book Theme Meme, a weekly meme that pairs books and music and hosted by me, Lila. Let me explain the rules of the game. If you want to participate, here's what to do:
- Link back to the originator (Lila @ The Bookkeeper's Secrets)
- Choose a book o series
- Choose a song that you feel represents the book (fyi: it doesn't have to have words, it can be classical or score)
- Tell us what about the song reminds you of the book. Is it a particular lyric/s? Is it the general feeling of the song? Explain a little.
- Add your name, blog, and link to your post in the linky!
- Voila! You're done!
So let's get to it!
This week I'm featuring one of my favorite book series, Rick Yancey's The 5th Wave Trilogy and pairing it with the song "Radioactive (Cover)" by Koda. First off, the lyrics to "Radioactive" match up with Cassie's journey so perfectly
I'm waking up to ash and dust
I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust
I'm breathing in the chemicals (*deep breath*)
These lyrics set the stage, describing the ravaged, post apocalyptic world which Cassie and her friends live in.
I raise my flag and dye my clothes
It's a revolution I suppose
We're painted red to fit right in
These lyrics fit with how Cassie and her friends begin a little revolution against the invaders, fighting to reclaim the earth.
I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
This line TOTALLY fits for when Sam gets taken from Cassie ad put on the school bus and it finally kind of sets in with her that the apocalypse is really happening.
I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my system blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
These lyrics fit with how Cassie finally wakes up to the fact that she has to fight back against the invaders, to save humanity. As she realizes this, she's fully welcomed to the new age of the post apocalyptic world.
I chose to pair The 5th Wave with Koda's cover of "Radioactive" versus the original version of the song by Imagine Dragons because I felt like the softer tone felt more like a realization of revolution. And it also seemed more "futuristic" to me. It also fits the pacing of The 5th Wave Trilogy, which is a little slower.
