What's Up On Wednesdays! | Look Who's Little Miss Slumpy...

Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Good day to you, mon petit duckings! 'Tis I, your overzealously friendly neighborhood Lila! How ya doin'? Whatcha up to? Turns out I like This format so I'm back (and betta than eva!) with another What's Up On Wednesdays! What's Up On Wednesdays is my Frankenstein-esque mishmash of WWW Wednesdays (a weekly meme hosted by Taking On A World Of Words) and Waiting On Wednesday (a weekly meme hosted by Breaking The Spine)! But enough with the explaining shenanigans! You came here to here me ramble incoherently about books (right? right!)! So let's get get down to business to defeat the Huns!

Whatcha Readin' Now?

Heh. Soooooooo, yeaaaaaaah. I'm officially in a reading slump. How do I know for certain that I'm in a slump? Ooooooh, maybe because IT'S TAKEN ME A WEEK AND A HALF TO READ A BOOK I ACTUALLY LIKE AND I'M STILL NOT DONE WITH IT!!! So, yeah, that's why I'm still listening to the audiobook of My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows. I'm loving the book, though! It's a hilarious retelling of history recounting the not-so-true story of Lady Jane Grey. The narrator is an absolute riot, too! Her voices and comedic timing are mmm, mmm good! I will say there are a few times when the story starts to drag because it gets lost in its own humor, but for the most part its good!

Whatcha Been Readin'?

Hahahahhahahahahahhahahahaha! Reading during a reading slump? Oh, you're funny!

Whatcha Gonna Read Next?

I'm thinking that my the time I finish My Lady Jane, I'll have to return all of my other library books, unfortunately. So I'm thinking that next I'm going to pick up This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab. I honestly know very little about this book. From what I know it's about a girl who wants to be a monster and a monster who wants to be a human? But the monsters also can look like humans? And the girl and the boy (who's a monster) become friends and help each other? Either way, it would be my first time reading a Schwab book and I'm super excited for it!

Books On My Radar

I KNOW YOU LIKED SEEING MY RAPPING SKILLZ LAST WEEK,
I THINK WE CAN ALL ADMIT THAT THEY WERE ON FLEEK!
SO I'M BACK AT IT AGAIN WITH ANOTHER ONE,
TRUST ME, IT'LL BE FUN, SON!*
THE BOOK I'M TALKIN' 'BOUT TODAY IS CALLED The Architect of Song
AND TRUST ME, IT'S SOUNDS SO GOOD YOU'LL WANNA READ ALONG!
A.G. HOWARD IS THE BOOK'S AUTHOR,
A BRILLIANT WRITING GENIUS--YEAH, THAT'S HER!
THE BOOK'S A GOTHIC NEW ADULT FANTASY,
A SUBJECT THAT I, FOR ONE, HAVE WANTED TO SEE!
I'M GONNA STOP NOW 'CAUSE I'M OUTTA RHYMES,
TO CONTINUE ON WOULD BE THE WORST OF RAP CRIMES**
...Dear god, I really need to stop rapping, like, pronto. I think these things get worse and worse every week, yet I still keep going. Which isn't surprising, given my extreme stubborn streak...Anyway, enough about my rapping skills, you read this far/skipped down to this part (and thus ignoring my mad rapping skillz--which, if that is the case, you should go back and subject yourself to that rap) beacuase you want to know about the book that's on my radar for this week. So, as a treat for making it this far, I'll tell you! The book on my radar this week is....DRUMROLL PLEASE!...*dramatic pause for tension*...The Architect of Song by A.G. Howard, expected publication date August 15, 2016!!! Guys. I am so hyped for this book. From what I know (fact check me, please) it's a gothic fantasy New Adult!!! Eeeeeee! Since I discovered New Adult, I've been asking and pleading that authors write some serious fantasy/sci fi books in the age range and it seems like authors are finally responding to that demand! First Sarah J. Maas wrote her A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy and now this book series! I know, that's not millions of fantasy/sci fi New Adult books, but it's a start! Anyhow, here's the Goodreads summary for The Architect of Song...

A lady imprisoned by deafness, an architect imprisoned by his past, and a ghost imprisoned within the petals of a flower - intertwine in this love story that transcends life and death.
For most of her life, nineteen-year-old Juliet Emerline has subsisted – isolated by deafness – making hats in the solitude of her home. Now, she’s at risk to lose her sanctuary to Lord Nicolas Thornton, a twenty-seven-year-old mysterious and eccentric architect with designs on her humble estate. When she secretly witnesses him raging beside a grave, Juliet investigates, finding the name “Hawk” on the headstone and an unusual flower at the base. The moment Juliet touches the petals, a young English nobleman appears in ghostly form, singing a song only her deaf ears can hear. The ghost remembers nothing of his identity or death, other than the one name that haunts his afterlife: Thornton.
To avenge her ghostly companion and save her estate, Juliet pushes aside her fear of society and travels to Lord Thornton’s secluded holiday resort, posing as a hat maker in one of his boutiques. There, she finds herself questioning who to trust: the architect of flesh and bones who can relate to her through romantic gestures, heartfelt notes, and sensual touches … or the specter who serenades her with beautiful songs and ardent words, touching her mind and soul like no other man ever can. As sinister truths behind Lord Thornton’s interest in her estate and his tie to Hawk come to light, Juliet is lured into a web of secrets. But it’s too late for escape, and the tragic love taking seed in her heart will alter her silent world forever.
International and NYT bestselling author, A.G. Howard, brings her darkly magical and visual/visceral storytelling to Victorian England. The Architect of Song is the first installment in her lush and romantic Haunted Hearts Legacy series, a four book gothic saga following the generations of one family as - haunted by both literal and figurative ghosts - they search for self-acceptance, love, and happiness.
New Adult: Recommended for ages 16+.

*or, ya know, daughter or whatever gender identity you choose, 'cause we don't discriminate here
**and let's admit it, my raps are already tragic crimes committed against rap, so I can't be accused of anything more...
