Welcome to Hardcover Haven, a haven for any and all bookworms! I'm Lila, your guide around this particular patch of internet. I'm a twenty-something college student studying anthropology. When I'm not reading, I can usually be found singing, spending time with family and friends, and/or snuggling my two cats, Snoopy and Clementine.

welcome

Month in Review | September 2017

Hey, peeps! Lila here! And, once again, it's time for my monthly review! Fortunately, September was a pretty chill month. The weather cooled down a bit (relatively because I mean I do live next to a literal hell swamp of politics....literally. DC is built on a swamp and is, ya know, full of politics) and things are beginning to slow down a tad and become more routine. Anyhoo! As for my reading life...it's been...slow. Slower than a slug, to put a finer point on it. I'm still in a slump--but, hey, I read one book and that's something, right?! Right?!?!!! Try as I might, something in me says that for now I'll have to be satisfied with slow progress which begins by taking baby steps. *sigh* Anyhow, let's not dwell on my bookish shame, let's just get on with the wrap up...

There's been no big changes on the blog so there's not really any news for this section.

POST FLASHBACK
Reading Wrap Up + Mini Reviews
Graceling by Kristin Cashore ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
I loved this book, it's for sure a new favorite! It's fun, it's fantasy, and it's super feminist--what more could you ask for in a book?! (Hint: The correct answer is "nothing") I loved absolutely everything about this book and I can't wait to continue with the series! 4.5/5 Stars

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson ⭐⭐⭐
Okay so technically I fiished this at 3:00 a.m. on October 1st, but I read the bulk of this one in September so I'm counting it! Anyhoo. I hhad such high hopes for this one but ultimately I was let down. It was an entertaining read, but it was riddled with inconstencies and loopholes born of a weak plot and shallow world-building. Plus there was no diversity. So, sadly, this one was not the new favorite I expected it to be.

Music Favorites
I have a really eclectic mix of music for September's playlist. Half of the songs are newly discovered ones and the other half is old music that I rediscovered recently. Some of them are total dance bops, some of the are more moody morning contemplation songs. Either way, as weird a mix as it may be, I'm loving this playlist and I hope y'all will too!

Movies/TV Favorites
Sadly, I watched no TV or movies in September and thus have nothing to report in this section. #BetterLuckNextMonth

Other Favorites
Y'all. I've found it!!! The magical daytime shade of lipgloss that matches my skin tone! For those non-PoC wondering what on Earth I am talking about--do y'all have any idea how hard it is for PoC to find makeup shades that look good on us which don't also cost a fortune?!?! Let me tell ya--it sure ain't easy. I, myself, am mixed Arab, Black, and Native American and have a mixed skintone and finding a good color match is like trying to find a single strand of blonde hair in a haystack! But rejoice, my dear friends, for in September I discovered...Wet 'N' Wild lipgloss Shade #550! Now I will say that this brand wears off pretty fast, but luckily I have a good eye and can color match the shade with a lipgloss from another brand and bada-bing bada-boom, pure lipglossy perfection here I come!

Life Events
My life was actually surprisingly chill in September. I hung out with my bestie and helped my mom move, but that was about it. I'm still feeling really good in terms of mental health, so I'm really happy about and proud of that. But, yeah, that's all!

How was your September, peeps? What did you read? Did you do anything fun? What are you looking forward to that's coming up in October?
