i'm going on an adventure!!! | wyrd & wonder 2024 stop #1: mount tbr

Wednesday, May 8, 2024

Hello again, dear friends! I hope all is well for you, and if not, I hope brighter days head your way soon! Well, friends, I'm excited to say that this year I'm going on another adventure by participating once again in Wyrd & Wonder!

For those who may not be aware: Wyrd & Wonder is a fantasy-centered blogging and reading event which takes place every May and which is hosted by Imyril, Annemieke, Aria, Jorie, and Lisa. You can find more info about the event here. I've participated in previous years, and it's always so much fun! So, naturally, I'm very happy to be back and once again celebrating my all-time favorite genre of fantasy! And, how better to start off my journey than by scaling Mount TBR through sharing what I'm planning on possibly reading and watching for this Wyrd & Wonder?! Let's get going!

to be read

Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland At least beginning this chonky big boi of a new, Adult fantasy release is one of my priorities during this year's Wyrd & Wonder event. I haven't heard, like, anything about this book (which released on May 7, 2024), but the synopsis makes it sound absolutely incredible. From what I can glean, Five Broken Blades is about five different killers coming together to assasinate a god king. That's really all I know, but even just that sounds fantastic, so I'm hoping this book lives up to my expectations!

The Honey Witch by Sydney J. Shields Given that the theme of this year's Wyrd & Wonder is "comfort," it's perfect timing that I recently received an ALC audiobook copy of this upcoming Adult cozy fantasy! The Honey Witch is apparently about a witch cursed to never find love who meets a skeptic who doesn't believe in magic and, well, you fill in the rest 😉 This sapphic cozy romantasy definitely gives off comforting vibes, so I'm looking forward to possibly getting to it.

Blood at the Root by LaDarrion Williams I also recently received an ALC of this book as well, so it's also one that I'm hoping to read this month, especially since it looks AMAZING!

to be watched

Carnival Row Season 1 All I really know about this series is that it takes place in a Victorian-ish fantasy land and involves fae? But y'all know me—if it involves fae or fae-like characters, I'm in!

Good Omens Season 1 I've heard so many rave reviews of this series that I think it's time I finally start to watch it. Again, I don't know too much about this one, save for that it's an adaptation of a novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett and that it involves angels and demons. Also, I believe Good Omens has a heavy comedic aspect? But correct me if I'm wrong. All in all, I'm excited to finally see what the hoopla surrounding this series is all about!

The Power Season 1 This series is another book-to-screen adaptation, this time of a book that I remember being on President Obama's reading recommendations list. I guess that's one thing I can quite literally say "Thanks, Obama" for if I end up enjoying this show. The Power is apparently a sci fantasy about a world in which only girls and women gain a magical and destructive power, and the social ramifications of this occurrence. It sounds intriguing, but I am a little cautious going in as I'm unsure if the themes in this series are nuanced enough or if they are at more of a "welcome to Feminism 101" level.

spill the beans, friends!

Are you taking part in Wyrd & Wonder? What's on your TBR for Wyrd & Wonder and/or for the month of May? Also, what's your favorite fantasy book and/or a fantasy book you REALLY want to read?
